Many people join a therapy group reluctantly, skeptical of being open and vulnerable with a group of strangers. However by simply showing up and trusting in the power of ones voice, you can find honest and deep relationships with others (and yourself.)
Group can be an antidote to the thoughts or feelings that "no one else understands."
For adults, group therapy can be a place to discuss themes of feeling pushed out and alone even with family and friends – members might identify having a hard time jumping in and saying what they want or need. There might be experiences of self criticism and isolation that have prevented them from living the life they want. You might struggle when finding yourself saying "yes" when you really want to say "no." Joining a group offers the opportunity to move the progress of your individual work into a working relationship with other adults which can deeper ones understanding and awareness of oneself.
A Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP) is a clinical mental health professional who meets internationally accepted criteria of education, training and experience in group psychotherapy. A CGP is an ethical practitioner who is an expert in group psychotherapy and is committed to group psychotherapy as an autonomous treatment modality. The International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists offers this certification in group therapy for practicing clinicians. This credential requires a master's degree or higher in a designated mental health specialty and clinical group experience with supervision/consultation. The CGP is valid for two years and then needs to be renewed. The CGP provides formal recognition that the practitioner has a specialty expertise in Group Therapy practice.
